![]() The wonder of the deep ocean that Abzû presents at the start of the game is vague and intriguing but quickly evolves into a story that not only is unexpected but can be interpreted in varying ways depending on how you decipher the unspoken narrative. Not only is the music something to take in but the way in which it is presented is stellar a sudden silence could either hurl you into a state of panic or simply remind you of your immense surroundings. The gentle orchestra string and pipe collaborations alone add to the sense of wonder and have you expanding your exploration without knowing that you are doing so. It makes you sit back, investigate what you may not have noticed before and contemplate your next action even while you know all too well that there won’t be any repercussions for your actions.Ībzu’s descent into the unknown is brought forward by stunning visuals paired with an unassuming yet remarkable score. ![]() This is an aspect of Abzû that few games manage to achieve. The surrounding items pull your attention away from your chosen path, and while nothing has audibly been relayed to you, your mind has already filled in the blanks of your ongoing journey. One moment you will be exploring a densely populated marine ecosystem, and an instant later the lighting changes completely, along with the soundtrack, creating a suddenly sombre mood. At first this feels like a fun addition to move around the ecosystem at a quicker rate but in the end isn’t a particularly useful feature.Īrt style, audio and controls intertwine with each other to provide you with an overall tranquil experience throughout the game. When returning to the exploration aspect of the game you have the ability to grab a ride with the larger specimens of aquatic life that you encounter. Dolphins, manta rays, jelly fish and even some extinct species can be observed as they seamlessly appear to glide through the water in schools or simply by themselves. While finding your instance of zen you can look around at the immense area’s marine life and just take it all in. Taking a break from the ongoing navigation will allow you to find specific objects, usually near the ocean floor, on a rock platform or on top of pillars, that allow you to enter a serene meditative state. While the majority of the Abzû gameplay is made up of exploration there are additional features that add to the encapsulation of the various environments that you encounter. There isn’t a Princess that needs rescuing or a family member that you wish to avenge it’s just you and the ocean, and what lies ahead. Unlike traditional adventure games, Abzû doesn’t include any combat, RPG-like character progression or even intricate puzzles if you do come across a puzzle it will be a rudimentary one at its very best. You take the role of an unnamed diver who starts off this adventure by finding themselves floating in the middle of the ocean where to from there, is up to you. In the same vein as Journey, you are on a linear path, but your movements are not dictated. The primary focus of the game is on its wordless narrative, communicated by its tranquil art-style and vast ocean environments.Ībzû is developed by a small team including director Matt Nava and composer Austin Wintory, who had previously worked on Journey back in 2012, and their influence is heavily apparent. Abzû is an underwater adventure title that was originally launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC back in 2016 by Giant Squid Studios.
